Grasping stick 1

Use your dominant hand to take one stick by placing the narrower end as you do with a pencil tip. Adjust the stick to make the thicker end stick out one inch between your forefinger and thumb.

Your thumb's lower joint will help stabilize the stick. Place the narrower end on the inside part of your ring finger. Your middle and forefinger should be free from holding the stick entirely. This first stick will be your base stick and should not move as you pick up food.

Grasping stick 2

The second stick will be the one that does all the work. It will be responsible for initiating and completely moving food to your mouth. Line the thicker end of the second one with stick number one and have it peep out about one inch between your forefinger and thumb.

The narrower end should pass just below the tip of your thumb and between your index and middle finger. This is the basic way of holding chopsticks so you need to get comfortable with this stance.

Use the top part of your thumb to move stick 2. Make sure to not move the bottom part as it should never do. Your index and middle finger will be the leverage to push against your thumb. It will be the one responsible to tighten or loosen your grasp on the food.

Synchronize your middle, forefinger, and thumb tip to successfully operate your chopsticks.

Grab a bite

Practice how to squeeze and release the sticks so you would not get frustrated for not being able to get the food. Make the area between your sticks wider than the food that you want to grab onto.

Slowly lower and close stick 2 with stick 1 to grab your food. Start by grabbing larger food before trying to get smaller ones like rice and noodles.
