Reawaken Your Inner Child: Summer Camp For Seniors Allow Old People To Relive Their Childhood Experiences

For most of us, summer camp is all about children and teenagers. Adults involved in summer camps are often serving as administrators or companions for the young people.

Some summer camps, however, exclusively cater to old people and encourage them to participate. A number of summer camps are open for the elderly so they can relive their childhood experiences.

Hog Island Audubon Camp

Located in Bremen, Maine, the Hog Island Audubon Camp offers bird-watching and environmental education programs for adults, teenagers and families. Attendees will get to hike, watch birds and explore islands in Muscongus Bay and Monhegan Island and Eastern Egg Rock, which are migratory hot-spots of birds.

Campers are also welcome to clean intrusive weeds from birds' nesting locations, while other sessions allow participants to draw and take pictures of birds. Hog Island Audubon Camp is open in June, July, August and September, with admission prices starting from $895.

Camp Bonfire

Camp Bonfire, which is hosted by Lake Owego Camp, caters to campers aged between 21 and 75. Participants can choose from the camp's variety of adventures such as canoeing, kayaking, soccer, survival skills, terrarium building, freestyle rapping, wall climbing, yoga and tai chi, among others. All the activities are designed to relax attendees and allow them to connect with each other.

Located in Pennsylvania's Pocono Mountains, Camp Bonfire 2016 starts on Friday, June 10 until Sunday, June 12. A standard camp registration pass costs $449.

Camp Grounded

Adults of any age are welcome to attend Camp Grounded. The camp, however, has one rule: attendees aren't required to disclose their age.

Camp Grounded, which has locations in California, New York, North Carolina and Texas, also asks participants to withhold information about their jobs and surrender their phones and other electronic gadgets upon entering the camp's premises. This is to ensure that the attendees will have fun and avoid thinking about their responsibilities in the "real" world temporarily.

Attendees are usually aged between 19 and 75. Some of the activities at Camp Grounded are hiking, archery, tai chi, rock wall climbing, talent shows, sing-alongs and ballroom dancing.

Camp Chief Ouray

Camp Chief Ouray, run by the YMCA of the Rockies, usually caters to children aged seven to 17, but they also have a special treat for people ages 50 and above. Older people who are physically active can enjoy activities such as archery, arts and crafts, canoeing, fishing, horseback riding, zip line, woodcarving, rafting and exercise classes. At night, Camp Chief Ouray offers theme nights, vespers, skit/talent shows, barbecue and square dance.
