Video Game Updates: Square Enix 'Nier: Automata' In The Works, Will Have 'Final Fantasy XV' Crossover Elements? No Western Release Announcement Yet?

With "Final Fantasy XV" scheduled and ready for launch, the Japanese-based game developer "Square Enix" is ready to work on "Nier: Automata," a revamped sequel of their 2010 game "Nier." The game is said to have some crossover elements with "Final Fantasy XV," but Western release dates haven't been disclosed.

According to The Verge, the original "Nier" game, which was released on PlayStation and Xbox, did not sell well for a game coming from Square Enix. "Nier" game, however, was able to gain a fairly large following despite mixed reception. Square Enix plans to grow that following with "Nier: Automata."

Square Enix partnered up with Platinum Games to help in developing "Nier: Automata," taking into consideration the issues with the previous game like environment setup, graphics, and gameplay in order to address them. Platinum Games is the game studio behind PlayStation and Xbox action-games like "Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance" and "The Legend of Korra."

Forbes reported that "Nier: Automata" will not only get a revamp in graphics, but will also borrow certain elements like Noctis' engine blade from "Final Fantasy XV," which will be released for PlayStation and Xbox on Nov. 29. The "Final Fantasy XV" blade's unique evasion ability will also be present in "Nier: Automata."

Unlike the original "Nier" game, "Nier: Automata" will have a female character named "2B" and wields a swords and a gun. As per the report, players will have to find different combos that will utilize both B2's sword and gun which is similar to "Devil May Cry."

"Nier: Automata" will have a stand-alone story, meaning new players won't need to play the original "Nier" game in order to understand the series' main story. "Nier: Automata" will be set in the same universe as the original, but is focused on an ongoing battle by Androids created by humans and machines coming from a different universe. B2 is an advanced android created to help give the human-made androids an advantage.

Square Enix plans a Japanese release of "Nier: Automata" for the PS4 and possibly on PC on Feb. 23, 2017. No announcement of the Western release has yet been mentioned.
