'Black Mirror' Season 4 Update, Latest News: Is A 'San Junipero' Sequel Coming To Netflix Series?

"Black Mirror" Season 4 from Netflix and creator Charlie Brooker is under close watch by Episode 4 "San Junipero" fans awaiting confirmation of a sequel. If Charlie Brooker and co-executive producer Annabel Jones bring in a sequel to the existential puzzle that is "San Junipero," this will be a first for the "Black Mirror" series. However, the continuous conversation over the Netflix series episode is only matched by that of Season 1 Episode 1, "The National Anthem."

The Hollywood Reporter cites "San Junipero" director Owen Harris on the clamor for a sequel. Part of the popularity of "San Junipero" comes from the feel-good tone and seemingly happy ending of the "Black Mirror" episode. Owen Harris warns that with Charlie Brooker at the helm, a sequel may not end as happily.

A number of "Black Mirror" fans believe that this particular episode is multi-layered. Beneath the issues of technology use and romance, "San Junipero" is believed to have a more cynical layer that looks into perceptions of what waits beyond this life. The use of Belinda Carlisle's "Heaven Is A Place On Earth" may be a suggestion that while the characters Yorkie (Mackenzie Davis) and Kelly (Gugu Mbatha-Raw) struggled with existential issues, in the end they "settled."

Meanwhile "Black Mirror" Season 3 Episode 1 ("Nosedive") seems to definitely be getting a sequel - in real life. The Huffington Post cites MIT Technology Review in reporting that China is moving toward assigning social scores to citizens. In "Black Mirror" Season 3 Bryce Dallas Howard as Lacie struggled to climb up the social ladder through this type of scoring system.

Does this mean that China's plan is also setting up for a fall? Could the Chinese social scoring result to what happened to Lacie and Cherry Jones' truck driver character in "Black Mirror" Season 3? Would Charlie Brooker and "Nosedive" be justified?

Netflix is expected to release "Black Mirror" Season 4 come Fall 2017. Fans should get an idea of whether or not a "San Junipero" sequel is a go just before then. Season 3 was released on Oct 21.
